black eyed susans

elizabethhalt.com | black eyed susans

if you have black eyed susans in your neighborhood, you might want to pick some & put them in a vase with water & keep them there until they dry. black eyed susans are bright & cheerful in the wild & in a vase. when they dry, they are sweet & adorable.

i discovered this by accident – i have a habit of keeping flowers long past the time when most people would toss them – and then i went and picked two more bunches. i can just picture their dear little faces smiling sweetly at me in the dead of winter.

(just so you know, they do drop a lot of pollen, even when they’re dry, but i decided it’s worth it. and after they dry, i move them to their new home, which has no water in it.)

  1. OH!
    charming!
    like their daisy counterpart…
“don’t you think they’re the friendliest flower?”
line from one of my favorite movies…
    meg ryan and tom hanks…
    “you’ve got mail.”

  2. Hello Elizabeth. Dear Tammy above, enticed me over here. And so happy she did. What a beautiful blog you have here.

Oh my husband grows black eyed susans!!! I must do as you suggest. And let them dry. What a sweet new-to-me idea.

Perhaps it would be best, to have them on a cloth of some sort… Then the dropped pollen would have a place to “drop to” and be easily gotten out of the house. :-)

    Gentle hugs,
    Tessa

    Tammy: I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!!!!

Tessa: Thank you! And welcome! I’m so glad you stopped by. A cloth would work well, though I often just brush the pollen into the garbage. (Also, sometimes it’s pretty. I’ve gotten used to pollen this year with all my wildflower picking. :) I hope they look just as sweet in your home!)

Rue: I can feel the love from here. Thank you.

  5. You’ve inspired me to pick some of my black eyed Susan’s Elizabeth. I didn’t know until recently that they self propagate. We seem to have many more this year.

  6. Oh I will have to try this as I have many here…
